Bob Bowman ... for the People

Issue Paper #17

"What is your position on gun control?"

I’ve got a whole box of marksmanship medals from state championships and the Interservice Championships. Ideally, guns would only be used against targets and wild animals, not people; but this isn’t an ideal world. The framers of the Second Amendment were not concerned about wild animals, but the threat of a return of tyranny. (Unfortunately, tyranny has returned — the tyranny of the multinational corporations and banks.)

For the most part, the perpretrators of this new tyranny use political and economic control and manipulation, not brute force against the American people, but their actions against countries like Iraq and Yugoslavia show that they are capable of it. If we take away their economic and political domination and their means of manipulation (and we intend to), who knows what they might resort to? Many Americans believe that elements of the U.S. Armed Forces are already being conditioned to take up arms against their fellow countrymen.

Personally, I no longer own a gun. I have come to believe in nonviolent resistance. I believe it to be not only morally superior, but a far more effective means of dealing with oppression. I don’t believe American soldiers would follow the orders of industrialists and bankers to fire on their unarmed fellow citizens. Still, many Americans don’t agree with me, and they have a right to defend themselves as they see fit.

I will try my best to convince Americans to adopt nonviolent resistance. But for those of you who don’t, I will put my own unarmed body on the line to protect your right to your guns.
