Bob Bowman ... for the People
Issue Paper #16
"What is your position on the Environment?"
As a scientist, I have no alternative but to be an environmentalist. Those scientists who try to cast doubt on global warming and other threats to our future have prostituted themselves to the big money interests. They are hired guns for the polluters, the oil companies, and the transnational corporations in league with them.
Even in the 1980s, the evidence for global warming caused by human activity was strong. In 1992, I published an edition of "Space and Security News" devoted to environmental security. In particular, I called for non-polluting transportation, including electric and solar-electric cars. Another edition was devoted exclusively to the Kyoto accords and the need for the United States to ratify them and take the lead in implementing and improving them. Two other editions dealt with the effects of fluctuating magnetic fields on the human body. When I had my own radio show, I took the lead in successfully campaigning to get a high-power pulsed radar shut down.
For well over a decade I have championed a "carbon tax" which would cancel the subsidy we currently give to polluting activities. Such a tax would raise gasoline prices by about two dollars a gallon, making non-polluting vehicles cost-effective. In a Bowman administration, the Energy Department would have only two jobs cleaning up the toxic and radioactive mess it has made by decades of work on nuclear weapons, and developing clean, renewable, non-polluting, non-nuclear energy.
As a Conservative, I believe that one of the things we need to conserve and to pass on to our grandchildren is our planetary environment. I also believe that property owners should be fairly compensated any time the government takes their property or puts restrictions on its use which decrease its value. Sometimes in the interest of future generations, the government mujst take property out of private hands. But it is only fair that the taxpayers as a whole share the burden, not the affected property owner.
