MIXED RESULTS IN CALIFORNIA PRIMARY

Robert Bowman wins Reform Party vote
but not "Beauty Contest"

PRESS RELEASE

March 8, 2000

The Bowman2000 campaign got mixed results in the California March 7th Primary (the only one entered  by Bowman).  On the plus side, Robert Bowman received more votes from Reform Party members than any other Reform Party candidate, beating out Charles Collins and George Weber.  Bowman also received more than three times as many votes from Reformers as John Hagelin of the Natural Law Party.  If the Reform Party used the same rules used by the Republican and Democratic parties, Robert   Bowman would get all the state's delegates to the National Convention.  Of course that's not how the Reform Party works.  Delegates will be chosen by District Caucuses later this spring.

Bowman also got the most votes of any Reform Party candidate from voters of all third parties, running particularly strong among both Greens and Libertarians.  Bowman was also the top Reform candidate with Republican voters, getting almost as many votes as all other Reformers put together.  With Democratic voters, Bowman ran second to George Weber, who seemed to be the heavy favorite of pro-life Democrats.

In the open "Beauty Contest" primary, Bowman beat out John Anderson and Charles Collins, but was bested by George Weber and celebrity non-candidate Donald Trump.

So who won the California primary?  Bowman?  Trump (who wasn't running)?  Or Weber (who was dead last among Reform Party voters)?  It depends on how you look at it.
